My approach to the production of Nabowa Meets Carlos Niño & Friends was to serve the original music while reimagining it.
I was interested in the sound and feel being very "Nabowa" while having it represent the musical space and energy that my collaborators and I are in.
After listening to the Nabowa recordings and picking the songs that I wanted to work with, I reached out to Dexter Story of Ethio Cali, The Life Force Trio, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson of Suite For Ma Dukes, Jesse Peterson of Turn On The Sunlight, Kamasi Washington of West Coast Get Down, and my partner in Ammoncontact Fabian Alston, to help me expand the project.
I found sections of the songs that I wanted to use and edited them to build on.
I added many layers, then pealed away, revealing my final mixes.
Some of the songs are very simple and stripped-down focusing on a rhythmic or melodic idea, while others are more complex and varied.
Keyboards, percussion, strings, saxophone, and effects now accompany the Nabowa quartet of guitar, violin, bass, and drums.
It was a fun and quick process, 1 month from start to finish.
I'm very happy with how it turned out!
